Ladies and Gentlemen:
“If I could reach higher, just for one moment to touch the sky…”---this is from my favorite song Reach.
When we are appreciating the passionate melody of Gloria Estefan, we could hardly imagine that she could return to the stage after her paralysis. In the year 1990, this Cuban singer was knocked down in a traffic accident, and the doctor declared that she might never walk again. But Gloria did not give up and kept up constant exercising. Just one year after the disaster, she stood up again and presented this encouraging song at the Atlanta Olympics.
Whenever I think of Gloria, I can’t help recalling my memory seven years ago, when I first entered university. Naturally shy, ordinary looking, average scores in study, just like an ugly duckling, I seemed to be the least outstanding one in my class. And the successive failures in the beginning led me into despair. “Am I destined to take the back seat to others?” Unwilling to submit to the fate, I paid more efforts on my study as well as many other activities, film dubbing, recital, drama… cause I just want to catch every little opportunity to prove myself. Constant effort yields sure success. Thanks to the competition, I received some awards and most of all, I gained the courage and confidence to face any difficulties in my life journey.
Life is just like farming, and what you can reap depends a lot on your sowing and dedication. Once you have a dream, don’t be hesitant. Your next difficult step may be the one to the top. Keep going forward, even in the toughest time, and never give up.

Ladies and Gentlemen:
My name is Tiffany, a Year 2 student from the University of Macau. I am currently an active member of the university Public Speaking Team, president of the Honours College Student Association, and also the vice president of the event department in Marketing Society. I am very active and outgoing. I enjoy being with people, engaged in conversations with them so that I can understand them more. I like public speaking as it can help increase my self-esteem and self-confidence. Aside from public speaking, I am also good at English recitation. I have joined the Ma***-wide English Individual Recitation for a number of times when I was studying in the secondary school.
Imagine a car without a steering wheel. Tough to imagine, right? Well, actually that’s the image you see if a person has no faith. Faith helps to guide us in our lives, encourage us to persist, and give directions when we are lost.
In this peaceful era, our life paths seem to be already well-planned and determined. What we have to do is to follow. Yes, we may face different sorts of challenges, but at least they are less harsh when compared to those in the past. We do not need to worry about starving to death, or how to earn enough money to buy food for our siblings and sustain our lives.
It is like driving from a muddy road into a highway. In the muddy road, path, you would say, as it is formed only by crossing on it many times, flattening the ground to form a smoother area so we can pass. The road is so bumpy and rough, with holes here and there and rocks lying all over. When we drive along this road, we have to be very careful, having a firm grip on the steering wheel, ready for a sudden turn or a large boulder that may appear any second. However, when we drive on a highway, everything becomes different. The road is smooth, straight, and visible. Since there is no unseen obstacle, we may lower our guard, relax a bit, and loosen our grip on the steering wheel. One may even think, if we only have to drive on a smooth straight road like this highway, why would we need a steering wheel?
Nevertheless, one cannot foresee the future. Accidents do happen. For example, a car may suddenly appear in front of you. At such times, if you did not have the steering wheel, how could you make a sudden turn? Just as no one could foresee the Sichuan Earthquake nor the Japan Tsunami. If the one being trapped under the debris did not have faith, he/she would not have survived until being rescued. If we did not have faith, we could not recover from our sadness and rebuild our home.
Faith is unique, just as happiness is. We feel happy for different reasons, we believe for different things. How can we know what we believe in? Recall the last time you are discouraged, and you felt you had lost all hopes in your life. What pulled you back into the world? What pushed you to stand up and continue to strive again? That is your faith, your belief. Faith is what makes you feel you can when others say you can’t.
Faith is important…, faith is vital…, faith is necessary for us to live our lives. If we do not have faith, we are like a car without a steeling wheel. We can only afford to move along a straight and smooth path, and cannot meet any challenge in our lives. One must understand that no matter how smooth the road is, it is impossible for a car to go without a steering wheel. Or, put it in another way, have you ever seen a car without a steering wheel on the road? So, act now, my friends, find out what you believe in, find out your anchor in your life, hold on to your steeling wheel of your car, drive on, and reach your destination.

“Life is just a series of trying to make up your mind.” Making a choice means something is kept while something is eliminated. But as a great many development of the international community usher in a new world, which is, paradoxically, more culturally diverse AND globalized, I begin to wonder
if we must make a choice,
if things are only black and white,
if there’s a win-win coexistence of diversity rather than just the cruel “Survival-of-the-fittest” elimination that results in a world of monotonous unity.
My hometown is Dalian, and my university is in Shenyang. The changes that are taking place in both cosmopolitans are breathtaking. International conglomerates, BMW, G.E. are hiring the finest of the younger generation, while Starbucks, Haagen-Dazs, and McDonald’s are competing aggressively with local brands. As we immerse ourselves so happily in the international convenience, traditional brands and ways of life are withering in the jungle law of the commercial society. One lifestyle and another lifestyle does not always mean two lifestyles will simultaneously survive.
When foreigners come to China and see the same image of streets as in their own country, they feel more baffled than excited. YES, globalization brings international consumer goods and services, yet, such convenience shouldn’t be at the price of losing the Chinese ingredient in the recipe of global diversity. And when Starbucks opened a shop in the Forbidden City in Beijing, the emperor turned over in his grave.
It is, without a shadow of a doubt, the job of the younger generation to make sure things will only be better off for China and the world. With a leap of faith, I came to a decision half a year ago. So, I set my mind on overseas education. Such a decision was not to pursue a blind pilgrimage of Western culture, but to provide my self a new perspective, a catalyst for personal growth as I integrate wisdom and experience of both worlds to become truly international. As I celebrate Chinese culture with the rest of the world, one education AND one education trigger development that can’t be measured with a number, two.
The world is evolving. The only thing not changing is change itself. Yet however fast the world changes, the essence remains the same. It is our responsibility, NO, our obligation as young people, (which ever country we’re from,) to make sure that when worlds come together, our respective characteristics are kept while new traditions are formed in the process. Hand in hand, I’m more than confident that we CAN offer future generations a world of unprecedented harmony and diversity.

Hi. I’m Alex from Bei Jing No.80 middle school. It’s an honor for me to have this opportunity to share some of thoughts with all of you at this moment.
As we all know, Beijing has the opportunity to host the 2008 Summer Olympic Game. We have been waiting for years for this chance to show others around the world to our very home, and show them the combination of technology, history, and environment that we all cherish well. We’re pretty satisfied with our nationality, locally. But as I traveled to a few foreign countries, I realize that some children with Chinese backgrounds are unwilling or ashamed to be what they are, because of some unavoidable racism and racial discrimination. And some are just embarrassed because they have black hair, brown eyes and yellow skin; they think being like this makes them look ugly, some even wished that they were Caucasian. It’s a sad reality that these people really exist. So I realized that how important it is to make understanding between others and us.
So, what does racism have to do with the 2008 Olympics? As I have mentioned, it’s a chance. But it isn’t just a chance for us to go and show others our culture. It’s a chance for us to go and show some people who we really are, it’s a chance for us to go and show some people that if they can do it, we can do it, too. It’s a chance to let them change their view about us forever, and then they will know that no matter what race you are we are all the same, no race is more better then the other in any field. But this chance only comes for once in a lifetime; let’s not waste it. I don’t think anyone wants to wait for another fifty years; the future is now. So don’t stand there and wait, you have to run to it. Maybe things will happen during this marathon, but one thing is for sure, we will all make it. So let’s not lose faith.
